Bythe time of over 1,000 years ago fishing villages appeared in the area of Shanghai with the city construction iniyiated in 751 ,the 10 th year under the reign of Tianbao of the Tang Dynasty. During the Song Dynasty, the place had evolved into a newly - booming trading - port. At that time Shanghai had some 18 large riverside areas ,one of which was known as “Riverside Shanghai ,” the particular location being right in the center of the present - bay Huangpu River alongside the Bund to the Shiliupu area, hence the derivation of the name of "Shanghai' as called today. Towards the middle of the 16th century in the Ming Dynasty Shanghai had become the largest textile center of the country. By the time of 1685, the 24th year under the reign of Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty the customs was set up in Shanghai and the city had already developed into a large trading port and a center for shipping grain to the royal capital in the country, renowned far and wide as a "port for inland waterways and sea-routes" and a "large city in southeast China."
