The second phase of the project is aiming at the year of 2005, before which a runway of 4, 000 meters will be put into use with the annual passenger flow of 20 million persons and 750, 000 tons of cargo transportation capacity. Besides, a passenger terminal building with a floor space of 800, 000 square meters plus 4 north-south runways for all types of jumbo jets to take off and land will be constructed according to the plan with its final scale set at reaching a capacity for handling 70 million passengers and 5 million tons of cargo transportation. As an auxiliary project, the Longdong and Yuandong avenues leading to the airport are of a respective length of 9.4 and 4 kilometers with a width of 50 and 100 meters. As the broadest way in Shanghai the Yuandong Avenue is designed to be an all-closed and viaduct urban artery of dual traffic with 8 lanes at a speed of 80 kilometers per hour.
