Zhujiajiao is a well-known small town iii the watery country south of the Yangtze River. A stretch of water winds quietly through the town with weeping willows dancing in gentle breeze. Spanning over the river is an old stone bridge and one can see rows of houses lined one after the other along the banks. In between rows of houses is the street paved with slabs of a greenish steatite. The Life-free Bridge in the town is the crown of all bridges in Shanghai area. Extending 72 meters in length and 5.8 meters in width the stone bridge of five arches strides over the river looking as if it were a colorful rainbow. It was built in 1571 , the 5th year under the reign of Longqing of the Ming Dynasty and got renovated in 1814. Now seen on the bridge is a piece of dragon-gate stone, on which are carved with eight dragons playing with a pearl, looking quite vivid and lifelike. On top of the bridge there are four stone lions. Charmingly they are welcoming passengers to pass by. The stone bridge is of quaint workmanship and a splendid piece as a whole. |
