How did the name "Waterfront" Come about?
In the terminology used for the place names of Shanghai it used to call the upper reaches era river as the "inner" while the lower reaches the "outer." The Huangpu River made an abrupt turn to the north somewhere near the present-day Lujiabang Road, for which the old record called tile upper reach of the river, west of the Lujiahang Road the "Iuner Huangpu" while the lower reach, east of the road the "Outer Huangpu," During the antedates to the beginning el tile Qing Dynasty the inner-side beaches along the Huangpu River were all called the "Outer Huangpu." but towards the period of Daoguang's reign, the "Outer Huangpu Beaches" south el the eastern gate were built into
a wharf area and the Huangpu beaches ceased to exit any more. And then the area used to he called the Huangpu Beaches started to diminish gradually to a section stretching from the Xinkaihe outside the eastern gate to Waibaidu Bridge on the north bank of the Suzhou River. From then on the Huangpu Beaches were shortened as the "Waterfront," known in China, se as "Waitan" or the "Bund," which means a road along the river or an embankment fnr taking a walk. driving carts and handling port husinesses in the eyes of Ihe westerners.
